Good news: The League of American Bicyclists announced that Shorewood has been designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community. Shorewood is the first and only village in the State of Wisconsin to earn the BFC award. All other Wisconsin BFCs (Milwaukee, Madison, Eau Claire, La Crosse, and newcomer-this-year Sheboygan County) are all much larger than Shorewood. Only a few communities nationwide with comparably-small populations (below 15,000) have earned the recognition. Almost 500 communities nationwide have applied for BFC recognition, and of those, currently 190 are designated as BFCs. With this award, Shorewood joins such other BFCs across the country as New York, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Boulder, Vail, Breckenridge, San Francisco and Palo Alto. Getting Shorewood designated as a BFC was the first project Greater Shorewood Bikers took on, and we are pleased that we have been successful (a thanks to all of you who helped out by contacting the Village, and expressing support for the application). Achieving this goal helps us advance GSB’s overall mission: “Working to make Shorewood an even better place than it already is to bike, so as to help make Shorewood an even better place than it already is to live, play, work and grow a business.” Although there is still much to do, a goal acheived is a milestone worth commemorating, so GSB is hosting a gathering next Tuesday evening (Sept. 27th), at The Three Lions Pub, starting at 8:00 pm. At the event:

See the unveiling of the Village’s new BFC Signs (scheduled to appear)!

Talk with the genius who is drafting the Village’s new comprehensive bike plan (and give your input)!

Meet Village officials behind recent Shorewood bike improvements!

Hobnob with fellow bikers!

Meet Greater Shorewood Bikers!

Drink tasty beverages!

All this and more, Tuesday! Hope to see you there. – Sandie (Co-Peloton Leader, Greater Shorewood Bikers)

Capitol Drive Construction Update 11/18/2010

The Oak Leaf Trail bridge over capoitol drive will be put into place this evening. Capitol Drive will be closed starting at 7PM this evening (Nov.18). The work should be finished overnite and Capitol Drive will reopen tomorrow.

The real bad news is that the bridge probably will not be available to ride on until next Spring.

Capitol Drive Construction Update 11/12/2010

The Oak leaf Trail Bridge over Capitol Drive at Wilson Drive is scheduled to be put in place Tuesday or Wednesday Evening (11/15 -11/16). Capitol drive will be closed in order to accomplish the task. Capitol Drive will be closed from approximately 7PM to 6AM.

Capitol Drive Construction Update 11/08/2010

We are pleased to report that Capitol Dr. EAST of Oakland Ave. is
nearly complete. The Village is still working with WE Energies to power the new traffic signals located at the intersection of Maryland Ave. and Capitol Dr. These signals should be in operation soon. Also, construction crews have been given approval to complete the sidewalk area at the southeast corner of Oakland Ave. and Capitol Dr. Work at this corner had been delayed due to the façade work taking place at the North Shore Bank building.
From Oakland Ave. to Morris Blvd, westbound traffic has been moved to
the newly paved north side of the road. Crews are currently completing work on the new medians in the middle of the road. In the weeks ahead, the new pavement will be completed from Morris Blvd. to the Milwaukee River. In the interim, westbound traffic will continue to travel on the south side of the road. Sidewalks and brick pavements on the north side of the road from Oakland Ave. to Morris Blvd. are near completion. In the coming week, crews will be working to finish the new sidewalks from Morris Blvd. to the Milwaukee River. Sections of the new Oak Leaf Trail bridge are expected to arrive at
the construction site on Monday, November 8. During the week, crews will be preparing the sections on-site for installation. The tentative date for placing the new bridge is during the evening and overnight hours of Friday, November 12. Please watch for more information about the installation that will require complete closure of Capitol
Dr. at Wilson Dr.

Capitol Drive Construction in Final Stages

After a challenging summer, we are pleased to see the reconstruction of Capitol Drive coming to an end over the next month to six weeks. The beautiful, balmy fall weather has helped the project keep pace this season. Plus, road construction crews are currently working six days a week and occasional Sundays to complete the project by the end of November. Landscaping of the entire stretch of Capitol Dr. will be completed in 2011. We are getting very excited to welcome our new look along the Capitol Dr. corridor – and thank everyone for their patience during the past six
months.
· East of Oakland Ave. Work on sidewalks, curbs, decorative bricks and sod placement
should be completed soon. Some benches and garbage cans will then be installed.
· West of Oakland Ave. The last piece of major excavation and reconstruction began on the north side of Capitol Dr. at the end of September and is due to be completed
in November.
Watch for the new bridge!

The second week in November is the projected installment date for the Capitol Dr. bridge that will serve as a welcoming gateway into the
Village and allow bikers and hikers to once again enjoy the full length of the Oak Leaf Trail. Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) representatives note that bad weather or other unforseen difficulties could still affect the timetable. Once the bridge is in place, it will still have to be paved before it is officially ready for use.

We’re all united by a shared passion: bikes. Bikes keep us healthy, carry us from point A to point B, save us from high gas prices, and make our air cleaner and our roads less congested. Bikes fill our lives with adventure and excitement, relaxing our minds and energizing our souls. Peopleforbikes.org is dedicated to channeling that passion to improve the future of bicycling. Our goal is to gather a million names of support, to speak with one, powerful voice—to make bicycling safer, more convenient and appealing for everyone.

Simply put, we believe that life is far more enjoyable when it’s experienced on two wheels. We believe that by coming together, we can make our world a better place to ride.

yes, THE Gary Fisher visited RJB earlier in May. Gary along with an entourage of Gary Fisher bicycle people and photographers were in the store to do a 2011 catalog shoot. They were at the shop for over 2 hours during which Gary displayed amazing paitence being posed by the photogs. Grueling work but someone has to do it. We were able to talk with Gary in between shots and he truly is an encylcopedia of bike industry info. History, speculation, prognostication(the e-bike will be the next mountain bike in terms of cultural attitude change) are all in his arsenal. Plus of course his fashion sense. But, for you non-fashionistas Gary has very practical cycling clothing ideas like the pants he had that looked like Board Room styling but were made with materials and design that worked perfectly on the bike.

I definitely learned that Fisher is an advocate of bicycling first and an icon second.
